Moments

Thank you to my writing compadre for this idea. It was a fun way to kick off 2021!


1)  Highlight of 2020--


Well, this was actually taken in November 2019, but the anniversary of this very special union was in 2020, so I am counting it. 1) Because it is that special. When one of your kids finds love eerily similar to the one you have with your own husband, there is a special kind of peace, and 2) because I have no other highlights of 2020 on my camera roll. None of my son's non-existent graduation ceremony from UF, no vacations, nada. 


2) Meaningful Moment



Doesn't look like much, but this gray whale sighting--particularly a scarred female--was a pivotal moment in my life. I wrote a poem about that day that was published, and the mystical events that surround it still resonate with me to this very day. 

3) Moment with Loved Ones


We have had so many great family vacations, but I just love the expressions on each of our faces on this Utah ski trip. Being silly and laughing. Posed, but not fake. I love these smiles and hold them close when things are stressed and tense. We will always find a way to get through challenges, support each other, and smile again. 

4) Something New You Tried This Year

On my walks through my neighborhood, I seek photo opps of birds, and this is my favorite one so far because of the light and feeling of promise it gives me. 

5) Something That Makes Me Proud

I am always proud of this two--warts and all--and so happy they have a bond--again warts and all--that seems to transcend their differences. 


6) Something That Makes Me Feel Connected

I could insert so many different nature pics and vacation pics here, but this one wins. It shows a special connection with 3 ladies through writing and music and teaching and really just life. 



7) Something That Just Makes Me Smile

I love this picture of us--mostly John wearing his spirit animal on his head. I have so many photos that make me smile, but this one always takes the cake. His silly side always makes me giggle because it is unexpected :).

Kind and Generous

Last week, my post was inspired by "These Are Days" by 10,000 Maniacs. In her response, a dear friend dropped another gem by Natalie Merchant: "Kind and Generous." The lyrics really hit home, especially these days. I've been working hard to overcome some pretty unsavory and deep-seeded feelings, emotions I thought I was doing a bang-up job of ignoring and squelching. Until I wasn't. I've always been empathetic and compassionate with others but have always struggled to extend those kindnesses to myself. Somehow I got the message that I wasn't worthy of it, that I had to live up to some impossible set of standards just to be good enough. And, don't misconstrue this as me blaming my mother (everyone blames the poor mother) or my upbringing in general. These messages come fast and furious from all directions in our society. Say "Ahhh"

No, this is not about going to the doctor. No one will be sticking a tongue depressor so far back in your throat you want to gag. I promise. The "ahhh" I'm talking about is that rush of air pushed out after a deep inhale, that point of release where you exhale all the stress building in your body, all that stuff making your neck tight, your heart race, your head pound, your brain freak out. My #1 goal for 2018 is to breathe through situations that would normally trigger worry and anxiety. The great thing is, I can pull it off without any special equipment or without drawing attention to myself, and especially important feature when you work with middle schools students who claim you're " triggered " every time you do or say anything they don't approve of.
